Is VMWare Part Of Your Server Virtualization Strategy?

Businesses are going virtual with Our VMware Virtualization Service!

VMware Virtualization allows you to virtualize your entire IT infrastructure, or specific aspects of it, so you can run multiple operating systems and applications at the same time. This increases the efficiency of your IT system, your employees’ productivity, and saves you money on expensive IT equipment. Server Virtualization

How Does Virtualization Work?
A virtual machine (VM) is a tightly isolated software container that can run its own operating systems and applications, and acts just like a physical computer. Many virtual machines can run on a single computer at the same time. A hypervisor is used to separate the virtual machines from the host, distributing computing resources to each virtual machine as needed.

Types of Virtualization
Server Consolidation
Server consolidation uses computer server resources efficiently so the total number of servers or server locations is reduced. You can virtualize one or two servers, or aggregate a server cluster into a consolidated resource. Server consolidation reduces your hardware count and the costs associated with it while increasing the performance of servers.

Storage Consolidation
Storage consolidation combines data storage among multiple servers. VMware virtualizes your storage by combining your existing server disks into a shared group, without the cost of purchasing a SAN (storage area network) system. Storage consolidation increases your IT efficiencies because the time required to access and store data is reduced.
Desktop Virtualization
Desktop virtualization is used to separate a computer desktop environment from the physical computer. Your employees use a virtual desktop in the same way they would a physical one. Virtual desktop solutions increase business flexibility, reduce costs, and simplify management.

iOS 6 – The business users update

Apple’s latest mobile OS is official. Here’s a list of the features that should make your work life a lot easier

Apple iOS 6 is finally here, and with it over 200 updates, features and improvements.

Apple has tossed in plenty of good stuff for business users – starting with its homegrown Maps app, which is good news for iPhone owners but bad news for GPS-app developers.

Here’s the low-down of the most business-friendly features you’ll find in iOS 6.

1. Turn-by-turn navigation

The new Maps app will finally offer something Android users have enjoyed for a while: turn-by-turn navigation. That means your iPhone can steer you from point A to point B without the need for a pricey third-party app. Plus, it’ll have Siri integration, so you’ll be able to ask for the nearest gas station along your route, find out how much longer your trip will take, and so on.

2. Real-time traffic
Also coming to Maps: real-time traffic updates, meaning you’ll be able to spot trouble areas and possibly even find out what’s causing the hold-up (construction? an accident? a cop on the side of the road?).

What’s interesting is that Maps will share (anonymously, of course) real-time traffic data from your phone (and everyone else’s) and update the traffic based on all the data, meaning we may finally see a crowdsourced traffic system that works. Whether it actually helps is another story.

3. New phone features
Since the dawn of iPhone time, you’ve had exactly two options for fielding a phone call: Decline and Answer. In iOS 6, you’ll also see these buttons: Reply with Message and Remind Me Later.

The former lets you kick back a canned text message (e.g., “Call you later”), while the latter will set a reminder for a callback.

4. FaceTime over 3G
FaceTime can be incredibly handy for showing rather than just telling, but because it requires Wi-Fi at both ends, it has limited in-the-field applications.

But with iOS 6, Apple is enabling FaceTime over 3G connections, effectively opening the floodgates to what you’ll be able to do with it: show a mockup of a new product, report back to the home office from the trade-show floor, and so on.

5. VIP Mail
Taking a page from Google’s Priority Inbox, iOS 6 lets you designate contacts as VIPs, then filters all messages from those people into a special VIP Mail folder.

Another notable update: You can now attach photos or videos to an email from within a new message. No need to hit the Photos app first. I know that’s a win for me.

6. Passbook
Good news, frequent flyers: This new app keeps all your airline tickets (among other things) in one convenient location. Even better, it’s location-aware, meaning your boarding pass will pop up on the lock screen when you get to the airport. It can even update the boarding pass in real time with gate-change information and which business traveler won’t like this feature.

Lync for Android is finally here…

December 14, 2011

Today, Microsoft released Lync for Android. In an interesting twist, it appears Microsoft released Lync for Android before Apple iOS. It seems more and more these days that Android is getting the app love before the popular iOS platform.

Lync 2010 for Android includes features such as rich presence, instant messaging, audio conferencing, and calling features.

Key Features:

– View colleagues’ availability in real time and select the best way to communicate – initiating an instant message (IM), email, or a phone call.

– Connect to Lync conference calls with a single touch, without requiring long numeric passcodes or conference numbers.

– Forward or simultaneously ring calls to your Enterprise Voice (Lync ID) number so you’ll never miss a call.

– Lync 2010 for Android provides transport layer security (TLS) and perimeter/internal network protection without requiring a VPN, so your communications experience is safer no matter where you are or what network you use.

As TMC’s  Tom Keating mentioned in a previous post, Lync for Android is lacking some key features, including no visual voicemail, no call via work, no single number reach, no dial pad, no send location/ map, and no push notifications.

On the bright side, it does run as a background app.

“Business Class” vs “Residential Class” Internet Connections

Why in the world would a business choose a T3 over much cheaper alternatives and what is the difference between “Residential” class and “Business” class?

This is a real question asked recently.

Here is how I think of it, when answering the reliability question…

T1 or T3 line is “powered” by the phone company, the phone company is very good about keeping all there equipment powered even when there is a disaster or major power outage because all their equipment is actually run by battery banks. These banks can run the equipment for 8+ hours, and are kept charging when line power is available. Because a T1 or T3 may carry voice traffic, such as 911 calls, up-time is important. Even if there are ground vaults or other devices that require power between the phone company’s central office (datacenter) and your office, these are all treated with the same battery banks, and pre-terminated trailer generator connections. Phone tech’s will tell you that T1 and other Hi-capacity lines usually get fixed first, POTS (or a single analog line with 1 number) will get fixed last. In many cases (but not all) you can consider a line from the phone company a “home run” to your location – as in, it’s dedicated to you (your business) all the way from them (the phone company central office).

The cable company however (like Comcast) requires many, many, more powered amps and splitters along the coax line. Sometimes these are aerial (on the line up near the power pole) and sometimes these are on the ground, either way they require power usually taken from the nearest power pole, and only sometimes do these get a UPS system (usually a cabinet that says Alpha on it, at least in IL) and this UPS is only good for about 6 hours (at least in my area, IL) When a cabinet is run out of battery, that’s it, there is no pre-terminated generator connection, nor do they think it important to bring one. On the rare case that they do, I’ve seen them take your standard construction site little gas generator, chain it to the power pole, and hard-wire it into the Alpha cabinet, leaving the front panel off so the cord will run in. :-/ Obviously if a large area is without power, they can’t afford or keep doing this to the hundreds of Alpha cabinets in the area – they just “give up” and wait for power to be restored. Beyond the power issue is the “shared” issue, the coax line is shared by all customers off the local cable plant, when one splitter needs to be replaced, or put in-line, they don’t think twice about cutting everyone’s service out to do it. Similarly when one amp needs replacing, it cuts off everything else further down the line.

Supposedly, “Business class” cable modem service is supposed to get better throughput than Residential, and in most areas it’s true, but you have to remember both are part of the same, single, coax cable run through your community, so one cannot really be considered more reliable, and any SLA is really only intended to make you “feel good” or give you better credits for downtime, there is nothing physically different about the service. The exception is when Comcast can offer you a fiber line, or their equivalent of Metro Ethernet, which is not coming into your building over coax – this is much pricier.

The actual data part, in terms of routing is pretty similar between the two – in both cases the routing and Internet redundancy is done back and the central office, not out at the street level.

Regardless of your connection type, within your company your should have the modem/router/CPE connected to your own, long lasting, UPS.

You need to decide how important your phone/data service is, and have a backup plan (call forwarding) if it goes down.

As an example, when major storms came through this summer, and many were without power for days…

– My customers on cable modem did OK for anywhere from 4 to 7 hours after the loss of power (Alpha boxes were still powering the line, but were then depleted) This is about the same as why traffic lights blink red for awhile after the power outage, but then eventually go dark)

– My customers on T1 or T3 lines never lost service however

…if your not concerned about such extreme cases, maybe paying significantly less for monthly service is acceptable – more often then not that’s what small businesses choose.

AirPrint is back for Mac and Windows on iOS 5 devices!!!!!

This month’s iOS 5 update caused quite a stir in the App and support realm. One of those was the wireless printing capability between iOS devices and non-AirPrint enabled wireless printers. The application called AirPrint activator allowed direct printing from an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch (running iOS 4) to non-AirPrint printers connected to the same WiFi access point as the corresponding Windows or Mac PC. Once a device was updated to iOS 5, the application lost its function so that non-AirPrint enabled wireless printers shared on the network would no longer display over AirPrint in iOS devices. As of writing, we still haven’t encountered an app or print agent to replace the AirPrint activator. Nonetheless, there is some sort of an AirPrint activator for iOS5 devices that can be used while developers are still on the lookout for possible tweaks.

FingerPrint: The Quick Fix

The quick fix is the mobile printing software called FingerPrint from developer Collobos Software. Available for less than $10, you can have this software running on your PC in no time so that your non-AirPrint enabled wireless printer will once again show up over AirPrint. Here’s a quick look of the features of this AirPrint activator for iOS5 devices:

Works over Windows and Mac Operating Systems. FingerPrint is compatible with OS X 10.5 and 10.6 for Mac and Windows XP (SP3), Vista and 7 for Windows. It is also designed with an uncomplicated UI and runs discreetly on the background.

Operates on Bonjour technology. Bonjour is proprietary software from Apple that is designed to locate devices such as printers. With complementary software, you can be assured that your printer will show up among the printer selections when you tap print on your iOS 5 device.

Easy to install. You got that right! It won’t take that long to install FingerPrint on your PC or Mac. Plus, it comes with an installation wizard so you won’t have to bother much with getting it all set up. You won’t even have to jailbreak the iOS device to make this work.

All you need to do is to download and then install FingerPrint. Upon launch, select the wireless printers you want to AirPrint enable and these will show up when you select the printer on your iOS 5 device. It’s that simple! Start with the free trial to check if this would work with your wireless printer.

Perhaps the only drawback is that the FingerPrint is not a Windows service so that users need to manually start it during boot up. But then again, that is a small price to pay for using this sort of AirPrint activator for iOS5 versus buying an AirPrint enabled printer.

iTunes 10.5 installation issues…?

So you just got your new iPhone 4s and you are ready to sync it up to your PC, but in order to use the iCloud and other great features, you need to update your iTunes.

You jump on your browser of choice and download the latest iTunes from the Apple website and you run the executable… what’s this…  what do you mean it encountered an error!!!!

What’s this “hog-wash” about “There is a problem with this windows installer package.  A program run as part of setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.”!!!!

This is what we did to successfully installed iTunes 10.5 and everything works and my iphone is in good shape with iOS 5.0…

Step #1) Go to Apple download and update your Quick time to 7.7

Step #2) Go to control panel, add/remove programs.
click on “Apple Application Support”, click change, and repair.
Do same to “Apple Mobile Device Support”, click change and repair,
then to “Apple Software Update”, click change and click repair.

Step #3) Go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.
Once in Services, please verify that the “Bonjour” services is running.  If not you have to start it up.

Step #4) Now you can click on “itunessetup.exe” file that you downloaded. If you haven’t you need to download.

Step #5) Now it will install without any problems.

Step #6) In order to sync with your iphone you MUST restart your computer.

Please feel free to comment and/or post any questions you may have.
